The Spirit of the Bammy Awards

The Bammy Awards are about celebrating the spirit of collaboration -- it's about "WE," not "me.” In that spirit, the Bammy Awards process is set up to select one of the many extraordinary educators in each sector of the education community to "represent" his or her part of the education village in a collective, national celebration of all the good being done in American education. We are looking for world-class contributors and model collaborators.

At the personal level, a Bammy Award recognizes the individual's "contributions" to his or her sector of the education village and this grand collaboration we call education.

What the Bammy Award is, what it is not

The Bammy Award is based on the notion that collaboration, making a contribution and making a difference is more significant than personal achievements. Consequently, a Bammy Award is not a statement or measure of the honoree’s superior professional performance, abilities, credentials, qualifications, certifications, professional accomplishments or personal achievements (though all of these may be relevant). Ultimately, all individuals are being honored for their contributions. Consequently, making the short list or eventually receiving a Bammy Award is a community-wide honor for being an exceptional contributor, not a statement of superiority or a badge of victory. The word "winner" is simply out of step with the spirit of the Bammy Awards.

Congruent with the spirit and intent of the program, all participants and honorees acknowledge that a Bammy Award cannot be “won.” That the term “won” should not be used in referring to the Bammy Award, and that the use of the word “win”or "winner" when referencing the award or the recipient is a breach of the spirit of the awards.

Who can be nominated

The Bammy Awards are open to all individuals involved in the field of education and working within the 26 defined categories and domains.

Nominees must have been active in the field for at least part of the current school year. Individuals may be nominated for multiple categories where appropriate.

Re-nominations are allowed. Every awards season is new and past nominees as well as past honorees can be submitted for consideration each new year.

There are two types of honors

Nominations are being accepted for two separate awards: the Bammy Awards and the Educators' Voice Awards. Nominations for the Bammy Awards are made exclusively by members of the Academy of Education Arts and Sciences. Nominations for the Educator's Voice Awards can be submitted by anyone. Self-nominations for the Educators' Voice Awards are accepted and encouraged. Community and self-nominated individuals who receive enough community votes may catch the attention of the Academy and be upgraded to an Academy nomination, making them eligible for a Bammy Award.

Only Academy-nominated individuals are eligible to display the official Bammy Awards nominee badge on their web sites. Official Academy nominees' badges should be linked to their profiles on the Bammy Awards web site. Only sites that are linked as described are confirmed Academy nominees.

Disqualification

Ineligible entries may be disqualified at any phase of the selection process without notification.

Acknowledgment of nomination

All nominees will be listed on the Bammy Awards web site. Academy-nominated individuals will be designated and flagged "Academy review." Individuals nominated by the general education community will be designated as "community review."

Terms and conditions of entry/usage

All nominees must be associated with a web site or email address and must be accessible via the Internet.

Timely submission of an entry meeting the eligibility requirements ensures that an entrant will be reviewed and considered for recognition. No other representation or warranty is made by the Bammy Awards organization concerning nominees and all implied warranties are hereby expressly disclaimed.

If a nominee receives an award, the manner and details of announcing such nomination and award is strictly within the discretion of the Bammy Awards organization. Nominees understand that all awards may not be given or publicized in the same manner and some might be presented in a ceremony and others might not. Advance notification will be made available.

Note: The Academy reserves the right to eliminate any category that receives fewer than 50 nominees for the awards period.

Call for nominations begins in April. The nomination and public voting period closes on May 15, 2015. The Educator's Voice Awards honorees will be announced in June. Bammy Awards will be presented at a black-tie event in September.
